Hopi Red Dye Amaranth is a fabulous multi-purpose plant. Beautiful as a bouquet filler, it’s flowers are the reddest of all amaranth. It’s vibrant fuchsia baby leaves are catching on as the next fashionable microgreen. It's dark seeds can be harvested as a nutritious, protein rich, gluten-free grain. The people of the Hopi Tribe had been using this multifaceted plant for thousands of years. Growth Habit: Upright growth up to 8 feet with an abundance of round to heart shaped leaves and draping flower clusters. Taller plants may need stakes for support. Sun Requirements: Full sun, thrives in hot, humid conditions. Soil Preference: Average, well-drained soil. When to Plant: Direct seed in late Spring after risk of frost has passed OR start indoors 4-6 weeks before last frost date. How to Plant: Direct sow: sow seeds in soil, ⅛” deep, covering only very lightly as seed needs light to germinate. Keep soil moist until germination. Seeds should germinate in 10-14 days. Thin young plants 1-2 feet apart. Transplant: sow seeds in containers ⅛” deep, covering only very lightly with soil as seeds need light to germinate. Keep soil moist under germination. Seeds should germinate in 10-14 days. Transplant out after risk of frost. Space young plants 1-2 feet apart. When to Harvest: Harvest baby leaves as a microgreen; tender green leaves once the plant reaches at least 1 foot; cut flowers when nearly fully open through Summer and into Fall; seeds when they ripen in late Summer to early Fall. How to Harvest: Cut baby leaves or pick mature tender greens as needed. Cut flowers on long stems, remove lower leaves to prevent premature wilt. Cut seeds heads and bundle them to dry indoors in a dry, dark space. You can knock the bundles inside of paper bags to easily gather seeds as they fall, then separate the yummy seeds from the papery chaff. Uses: Amaranth has edible leaves, flowers, and seeds. Enjoy baby leaves as a microgreen, larger leaves as a tender cooked green, and finally the seeds as a high protein, gluten-free grain or flour. The mature, drapey flowers are beautiful in fresh cut flower arrangements. This plant is used as a dye plant by the Hopi people.

Feverfew is a member of the daisy family, which is native to central and southern Europe. Feverfew has been naturalized in most parts of the temperate zone. It is not uncommon to mistake it for chamomile, although once you're familiar with feverfew you'll notice that its growth habit and form is quite different than chamomile. Feverfew will grow multiple upright branches from a tufted mass of root, unlike chamomile which is low-growing. Feverfew produces a great greenish yellow dye from the leaves and stems in wool mordanted with chrome. Growing Feverfew is easy and requires little care once established. It prefers full sun but tolerates a little shade. Feverfew can be divided from root cuttings in the early spring.

Anyone who loves a well stocked spice cupboard will want this incredible plant in their garden. Every part of the Spicebush is intensely aromatic! The leaves have a spicy fragrance when crushed and can be used fresh in hot or iced tea. The twigs can be simmered in water for a warming tea year round. In Fall, the berries can be collected and dried to use as a culinary spice, which can be used in place of allspice in sweet and savory dishes - it makes a scrumptious spice cake! The peppery taste of Spicebush berries is also fabulous in meat rubs and marinades. Don’t waste any time gathering the bright red berries - birds quickly snap up this high-fat food source! Spicebush attracts interesting visitors in summer, too, such as the larva of the spicebush swallowtail butterfly, which feeds on the leaves. Spicebush is a lovely, native woodland shrub that works well in a border, at the edge of a forest, or in naturalized areas. It prefers moist locations in part to full sun. It grows to ten feet with pretty, teardrop shaped leaves. Clusters of tiny, perfumed, greenish-yellow flowers bloom along the branches in early Spring before foliage appears. These flowers give way to bright red drupes in fall, while the leaves turn a yellow-bronze hue. Female plants need a male pollinator to set fruit. Male shrubs have larger, showier flowers than female ones.
