Persimmon, North American (Diospyros virginiana) Deciduous. Zones 5 - 7.
How does one describe a persimmon... Perhaps you could imagine a perfect orb of apricot jelly, solid enough to bite into, yet jelly enough that it drips down your chin... A persimmon is one thing in life you must try for yourself!
The word "persimmon" is actually an anglicized Algonquin word. Pronunciation differs across dialects; putchamin, pasiminan, or pessamin, but the meaning is the same - dry fruit. And does an under-ripe persimmon EVER dry out your mouth! Please eat only very ripe fruit as an under-ripe Persimmon is very astringent!
This member of the ebony family can reach 50 in height and bears small orange fruit, 1-2 inches in diameter.
